Topic:
Non-verbal communication is an important element of the communication
process. During an interpersonal communication, it is done through
non-linguistic means or without the use of words which convey emotions,
attitudes, and intentions. Non-verbal communication cues typically include
gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, and body language.
Task:
There are many non-verbal communication cues used in the Pakistani street
markets or bazaars by the vendors and customers to share their messages such
as gestures, body language, posture, and facial expressions that facilitate
or hinder vendor-customer dealings and negotiations. Following are the five
non-verbal communication cues.
1. Nods and headshakes
2. Eye contact
3. Finger pointing
4. Smile
5. Step forward
Write down only one scenario for each of these cues that you have observed
or experienced ever.
Answer:
There are some scenarios based on the non-verbal communication cues you've
listed in the context of Pakistani street markets:
Nods and headshakes:
Scenario:
A customer is bargaining with a vendor over the price of a colorful shawl.
As the customer offers a lower price, the vendor nods slightly while
maintaining eye contact, indicating willingness to negotiate further without
verbally agreeing to the proposed price. The customer understands the
non-verbal cue and continues the negotiation.
Eye contact:
Scenario:
A vendor at a spice stall makes direct eye contact with a passerby who
seems interested in his products. Without saying a word, the vendor’s
prolonged eye contact communicates confidence in the quality of his spices,
inviting the passerby to approach the stall and engage in a potential
purchase.
Finger pointing:
Scenario:
A customer is browsing through a variety of embroidered fabrics at a
textile stall. Unable to verbally describe the specific design she likes,
the customer discreetly points her finger towards the fabric while
maintaining eye contact with the vendor. The vendor immediately understands
the non-verbal cue and retrieves the desired fabric for the customer to
examine closely.
Smile:
Scenario:
A vendor is showcasing handmade jewelry to potential customers passing by
his stall. Whenever someone pauses to look at the jewelry, the vendor greets
them with a warm smile. The smile not only conveys friendliness but also
suggests openness to negotiation and encourages customers to engage further
with the products.
Step forward:
Scenario:
A group of tourists is exploring a bazaar, intrigued by the vibrant
displays of traditional handicrafts. As they stop to admire a display of
intricate pottery, the vendor steps forward slightly, signaling his
readiness to assist them or provide information about the products. This
subtle movement encourages the tourists to approach the stall and inquire
about the craftsmanship and prices.
