GDB TOPIC

A company has a small network in which some nodes exchange data with each other. Two nodes of this network, node ‘A’ and node ‘B’ are specifically configured in such a way that the node ‘A’ can send data to the node ‘B’ as per the following specifications:

·        The data will be sent frame by frame.

·        Communication will be unidirectional.

·        An acknowledgment will be received before sending the next frame.

·        The propagation time is lesser than the transmission time of the frame.

·        The communication channel is noiseless.

Keeping in view the above scenario, you are required to suggest which data link layer protocol will be the most suitable from the following:

·        Address Resolution Protocol

·        Simple Protocol

·        Stop and Wait Protocol

·        Go-Back-N Protocol

Also, mention one Advantage and one Disadvantage of that suggested protocol.

SOLUTION:

Protocol Name:

Stop and Wait for Protocol

Advantage:

The main advantage is their accuracy. The next frame is transmitted only when the first frame is acknowledged. So, there is no chance of the frame being lost. It is used in Connection-oriented communication. It offers error and flows control. It can be used in data Link and transport Layers.

Disadvantage:

The drawback of the Stop and Wait Protocol is that it is inefficient. It makes the transmission process slow. If two devices are a distance apart, a lot of time is wasted waiting for ACKs leading to an increase in total transmission time.
