For example, a teacher using overt management might have a clearly posted set of classroom rules and consistently enforce them with visible rewards or consequences.

Covert Management

On the other hand, covert management refers to more subtle and indirect methods of control. It involves strategies that may not be readily apparent to students but still influence their behaviour. This approach often involves fostering a positive classroom culture, building relationships, and using non-verbal cues or signals to guide behaviour. Covert management may involve techniques such as proximity control (standing near a disruptive student to discourage misbehaviour) or using subtle signals to redirect behaviour without drawing attention to it.


The impact of these approaches on student behavior and academic success can differ significantly. Overt management can sometimes create a more structured environment where rules and consequences are clear, leading to immediate compliance. However, it might also result in a more controlled atmosphere that can stifle student creativity and independence. Conversely, covert management, while less obvious, can create a more relaxed and student-centered environment where students feel more autonomy and responsibility for their actions. It often fosters a positive classroom culture and can encourage intrinsic motivation and self-regulation.


In terms of impact on academic success, overt management might lead to immediate compliance and order, but it may not necessarily foster the development of critical thinking or problem-solving skills.
