SOLUTION:

Assessment is a way of supporting learning. It helps teachers, learners, parents and others to understand the depth and breadth of learning undertaken so that progress and next steps can be discussed and planned. Assessment is an integral part of instruction, as it determines whether or not the goals of education are being met. Assessment affects decisions about grades, placement, advancement, instructional needs, curriculum, and, in some cases, funding.

Assessment is more than grading. It's about measuring the progress of student learning. Thus, assessment is defined as a process of gathering data to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of student learning

Formative Assessment is the most powerful type of assessment for improving student understanding and performance. Formative assessments help teachers identify concepts that students are struggling to understand, skills they are having difficulty acquiring, or learning standards they have not yet achieved so that adjustments can be made to lessons, instructional techniques, and academic support.

Formative assessment has been shown to be highly effective in raising the level of student attainment, increasing equity of student outcomes, and improving students' ability to learn.

Providing students and teachers with regular feedback on progress toward their goals is the main function of formative assessment that will aid in increasing academic achievement. Formative assessment helps students close the gap between their current knowledge and their learning goals.

Summative assessments are designed to determine whether or not a module's learning objectives have been achieved. This strategy is also an essential part of the e-learning process, as it can help you determine whether or not the learner is ready to move onto the next section.

Summative assessments often have high stakes and are treated by the students as the priority over formative assessments. However, feedback from summative assessments can be used formatively by both students and faculty to guide their efforts and activities in subsequent courses.

Formative assessment examples:

Impromptu quizzes or anonymous voting. Short comparative assessments to see how pupils are performing against their peers. One-minute papers on a specific subject matter. Lesson exit tickets to summaries what pupils have learnt.
